Orange Marmalade

I just can't stop canning! It must be my form of nesting, or something. Last week, I canned 13 (YES! 13) quarts of orange marmalade!

5 pounds of navel oranges, 2 lemons, 9 cups of sugar, water, and over an hour of stirring at the stove gave me my plentiful bounty.

Some jars became part of Easter baskets, some went to friends, and some went to co-workers. Who says only children don't know how to share?

Canned Chicken Stock Recipe

So, I stepped up my canning game from pickles (simple water bath) to chicken stock (pressure canning)! Since I had two leftover carcasses from whole organic chickens I had butchered early this year, I decided it was time to make some stock. The following recipe makes 4 quart jars of stock. Prep all jars, lids, and rings and set up your pressure canner according to the manufacture's instructions.

What you will need:
2 Chicken carcasses (This includes the back and wings with skin on. I cook the gizzards separately and give them dog and cat...they love them!)
4 Stalks of celery, roughly chopped with leaves
1 Medium yellow onion, cut into quarters
1 Tablespoon salt
2 Bay leaves
18 Cups water

Mix all ingredients in large stock pot over high heat. Bring to a boil. Turn down to low simmer. Simmer for 2 hours.

Remove from heat and remove all large pieces of chicken, celery, and onion with slotted spoon or skimmer.

Allow to cool to room temp and then place in fridge for a few hours or overnight. After stock has fully cooled, remove all hardened fat with skimmer. Pour stock through strainer lined with two to three layers of cheesecloth to remove all solid particles.

Bring stock back to a boil. Ladle or pour into quart jars, leaving 1 inch head space. Wipe rims with white vinegar to break down any oil that may have gotten on them. This will ensure a better seal. Place lids on and screw rings to finger-tight. Process jars for 25 minutes at 10 pounds of pressure. Follow the proper canning instructions that were provided with your pressure canner.

And there you go! Yummy, healthy, homemade chicken stock to add to any recipe.

Chicago and The Bean

I just got back from Chicago for work. While most of the time we were stuck in the convention center, we were able to get out the first night and see some sites!

We visited Cloud Gate, otherwise known as "The Bean." The Bean is a sculpture made by Anish Kapoor and sits in Millennium Park. It bends the cityscape beautifully in the seamless surface and creates a House-of-Mirrors-effect on the viewer's body, and is so large you can walk underneath it. With all the people visiting The Bean, it reminded me how much people, like birds, are attracted to shiny objects.

I was also able to go to a three-story Old Navy that had a maternity section! It was so nice to be able to try on clothes and just put them back on the rack instead of shipping them back. I ended up getting a pair of shorts—I hate buying shorts to begin with, so maternity shorts really had me bothered!

All in all, it was a good trip, but I was very glad to come home.

Nursery Furniture

As soon as we found out we were pregnant, we painted the guest room. It originally was a hideous pumpkin orange color...not very easy on the eyes. And, it was actually the nursery room of the previous owners! Not a soothing and nurturing color, at all. Well, we painted the room in Fresh Aire Choice Northern Pear Tree.

Much more soothing of a color!

The nursery will have to double as a guest room for a bit, so we are going to keep the dark wood futon in the room. Here's what we are planning for furniture...

Hemnes 8-Drawer Dresser from IKEA in black-brown. Purchased last weekend and will double as a changing table.

Jenny Lind crib in ebony. I just love the heirloom feel of this crib.

The bedding will be cream. More pictures to come once it all starts coming together!

All Natural Jewelry Cleaner with Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide

For the past six months or so, I was getting a skin irritation around my ring finger. So much so, that I had to stop wearing my engagement ring (my wedding band seemed to be okay). I had attempted to clean it with soap and water and jewelry cleaner. I even took it to the jewelers to get a professional cleaning. All with no avail. I was still getting a rash around my ring finger within hours every time I wore it. I was worried I was allergic to my engagement ring, but since it is platinum I thought that was unlikely as I had worn it for almost three years with no issues. Maybe it needed to be replated? I really didn't want to spend the money on that. And besides, it is a Tacori...I would think that I wouldn't have to get a Tacori ring replated every three years or so.

After a little internet searching, I found what I believe is the best cleaning method for high-end metal and precious gem jewelry. I would never use this for costume jewelry.

Soak your ring overnight in 2 parts vinegar (I used white vinegar) and 1 part hydrogen peroxide. In the morning you will see all the loosened particles of soap, lotion, and other gunk that has been stuck in your ring. Boil your ring for 5 minutes. And, that's it!

I have been wearing my ring for three days now with no itching or redness!

I have some exciting news to share! Our family is growing. We will be adding a baby into the mix the end of July!

I also wanted to share with you the lovely artwork I will be hanging in the nursery. I have raved about my sister-in-law's artwork before, but I just can't get enough. I am now the proud owner of two beautiful original illustrations just perfect for the sweetest of nurseries. Thank you to my mom for getting these for us. You can find more original artwork at her Etsy shop.

On another note, the frames are from www.AmericanFrame.com. This place is amazing! Not only do they have an amazing selection of frames and mattes, but they are very reasonably priced and they are fast. I placed my order on Sunday and the frames were delivered on Thursday! And, just for a fraction of the cost it would be to take it to a framing store. Highly recommended!

Classic Baguettes

I am pretty new to making my own bread, but I am having so much fun! There is nothing better than warm bread fresh from the oven. In searching for good bread recipes, I found King Aurther's website. Their site has a TON of amazing recipes for not only bread, but for cakes, muffins, soups, pies, and more! I had been looking to make an Italian or French loaf with a soft and light inside and light-brown hard crust, and came across King Arther's Baguette Recipe.

I followed the directions completely (adding an extra misting of water about half way through baking to make the crust crunchier), and they turned out wonderfully! Just the kind of bread I was looking for!

Can't wait to have a piece with dinner tonight!

Grandma's Needlework

My most cherished possession is an embroidery my grandmother made in 1938 when she was 14 years old. It features the beginning of Psalm 23: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want".

Growing up, I spent the weekends with my grandma. This needlework was always hanging above her bed, and it is something that brought me great comfort—much like the psalm itself. Even though Grandma passed in 2008, I still feel close to her every time I look at it.

Letterpress Tray Jewelry Organizer

This was my latest project. I turned an old letterpress type tray into a wall-hanging jewelry organizer and display! It took quite a while to complete, as I had to take breaks when my knuckles were getting raw from twisting and pushing the eye hooks into the hard wood of the trays. But all the pain and effort was worth it! I just love my new jewelry organization method! Check it out...

So, I have always been in love with letterpress. In fact, it is sort of my dream to buy one and start selling cards, stationery, and invitations on Etsy. Maybe someday....*wistfully looks off into the corner of the room*

Last weekend, I took a letterpress workshop in Alexadria, VA. I figured if this was something I thought I really wanted to do, then I better actually get to it and take a workshop. And, as I had hoped, my love for letterpress was confirmed and solidified!

At the workshop, hosted by Stewart Bradely from Railway Station Press, we learned to set type, lock the chase, set the tympan paper and gauge pins, and ink the press (a beautiful tabletop Chandler and Price Pilot!). We made 40 copies of our own design—mine being Christmas cards.

Living with Less: Step 1

Step 1: Sell Only Vintage Jewelry on Virgo's Vintage

Why?
The amount of "inventory" I have accumulated over the past year was astounding. Once I went through all the to-be-listed items and packed them up, they totaled four large gray plastic totes...and then some! The clutter was taking over our spare room, which we have done nothing with because it has been the "catch-all" room. In fact, it is still decorated as a nursery...and the safari border is really not in our taste! I hope to have the the spare room a proper guest room, because a futon in a sea of boxes really isn't inviting for our guests. Also, jewelry is easier to store, easier to ship, and easier to take photos of. I will probably keep selling vintage holiday items, because they are so darn cute!

How?
I will be letting all non-jewelry items expire from my shop, and I will be giving my mom (who has two booths in shops in upstate New York) the expired/unlisted inventory.

Crochet Baby Jacket

I had previously posted that I was planning to make my goddaughter the Stargazer Sweater from Crochet Today! for Christmas, but I have decided to make the Baby Jacket by Mari Lynn Patrick that was in the Nov/Dec 2010 issue of Crochet Today! The change in my gift simply came from the fact that I cannot find the issue that has the Stargazer Sweater pattern...and the Baby Jacket is just as cute and snuggly.

Baby Jacket

I am using Eco-Ways by Red Heart in Lichen. Eco-Ways is made from 30% recycled polyester fashioned from plastics found in soda and water bottles. Though it doesn't sound like it would be soft and comfortable against the skin, it actually is! I am also using a J hook versus the pattern's I hook because my swatch was measuring too small. The pattern is pretty easy so far and working up quite quickly. After only working on it for two hours, this is what I have so far...

Living with Less

A constant battle rages inside of me between learning to live with less and having all the things I would like to have. Our 1,300 square foot house, built in 1949, has all the amenities of a house from that era— rambler-style, small closets, a galley kitchen that is hard to fit even two people in, no basement, and an attic that might as well be a crawl-space. To add to the matter, I love to sew and quilt and crochet, cook and entertain, and I buy and sell vintage...talk about passions that accumulate "stuff"! I must find a balance!

Don't get me wrong, I love our house. In fact, we bought it because it was not your typical cookie-cutter track housing you find so much of in our area. But, I am finding that having all these things in what is considered a smaller home (average house size in 2004 in the U.S. was 2,350 square feet) is holding me back and weighing me down. Somehow, I feel it's preventing me from doing those things above that I really enjoy. It is time to purge!

What to do? What is my action plan? What is my goal? Well, I need to change my lifestyle. I need to take assessment of what is really important to me. I need to ask questions of these things that are around me. I will be posting about my purging in the coming weeks (possibly months), along with completing my UFOs (unfinished objects) in order to get my life more in order. Hopefully I will be able to find a balance between learning to live with less and still being satisfied.

Happy Halloween! This is my favorite holiday...the holiday where you get to be whatever you want to be! What is better than that? And, to make it even better, I hosted my first-ever Halloween party last night. Here's what went on!

Head Cheese (dill and cream cheese dip with prosciutto)

Swamp Things (black olives, blackberries, figs, blue cheese, and crackers)

Lady Fingers (almond cookies with jelly) - recipe

Deviled Egg (with sweet red pepper horns and beards)

Mummies (crescent wrapped lil' smokies with mustard eyes)

Black Death (black current, black cherry, brandy, and seltzer)

Eyeballs (mozzarella balls and olive slices)

I used century-old family photos, candles, and cobwebs to create an eerie ambiance.

And there you have it...some of my decorations and my food! I hope you Halloween is/was just as fun as mine!

Crochet Ring Necklace Tutorial

I have finally worked up a tutorial that I promised so long ago for the crochet ring necklaces I have in my shop.

What you will need:
C/2.75mm crochet hook
4 - 1/2" plastic cabone rings
Embroidery floss in two colors
4 jump rings
Lobster clasp
2 - 9" pieces of 1.6mm sterling silver cable chain
Embroidery needle
Jewelry pliers

Step 1—Crocheting Around the Rings: Insert crochet hook into plastic ring and pull up loop. This counts as your first stitch. 20 SC around plastic ring, making sure to crochet over beginning tail. Cut off beginning tail that has been crocheted over. Leave 3"–4" tail at end to weave in (see step 2). Make three in one color, and one in the other color.

Step 2—Finishing the First Ring: Thread ending tail onto embroidery needle. Starting with the front facing you. The front is the side that has the nice crochet braiding. Place needle from back to front through the first stitch (see first picture below) Pull through and tighten. Place needle from front to back in last stitch (see the second picture below). Pull through and tighten. Run needle underneath crochet rings on back side to hide thread (see the fourth picture below). Trim end.

Step 3—Attaching the Other Rings: Thread ending tail onto embroidery needle. Starting with the front facing you. Place needle from back to front through the first stitch (like above). Pull through and tighten. This time, place needle from front to middle of last stitch (see the picture below). Pull through and tighten.

Holding the finished ring you just made in Step 1 with front facing you, run the needle through the middle of 2 or 3 stitches (see first picture below). Pull through and tighten. Run needle through the middle of 2 or 3 stitches on other ring (see second picture below). Repeat a few times until they are securely attached. Knot off and run needle underneath crochet rings on back side to hide thread (like in Step 1). Trim end. Repeat for third and fourth ring to form crocheted ring chain.

Step 4—Making the Necklace: Attach jump rings through a stitch on each end. Attach chain and clasp...and you are done!

Curb Appeal

Well, we finally finished landscaping the front of the house! It ended up taking us a month to finish, as we sectioned off areas to do every weekend. We started with the right side of the house (under the crepe myrtle next to the driveway. Then we did the left side of the house (under the bay window). Then we finished the right side of the house (where I had to remove a ton of grass).

Our process was: I pruned the existing azalea bushes back, my husband too a pickaxe to the stumps, we leveled the soil, I planted, we mulched. All I can say is, thank God it has been a cool autumn!

Enough of my rambling! Here are some pictures:

Sorry I have been MIA lately. It has been kind of crazy around here.

On the craft-front: I got a space at The Soundry to sell my crochet necklaces, so I have been making those like crazy! I will start selling there November 1, and plan to have more necklaces up on my Etsy shop soon.

On the home-front: We tore out and replanted bushes at the back of the house and tore out and expanded the flowerbeds at the front and side of our house. I first talked about it in July! So good to have it finally done. Pics to come...

On the vintage-front: I have been promoting a vintage Halloween via Facebook, here, and through Etsy treasuries (you can find some fabulous Vintage Market Team Halloween challenge treasuries here!), and gearing up for the Christmas season. I took pictures of holiday jewelry last weekend, and hope to start posting those within the next couple of weeks.

On the personal-front: I turned 30 a month ago! And...two days later I went out for a run and rolled my ankle at mile 1.5. I continued for another 5.5 miles to finish the 7 mile run. That night I had my combined birthday party with my best friend, Holly. The plan was that when we turned 30—no matter where we were—we were going to be wearing fabulous dresses. And, of course, I had to wear heals that were just as fabulous! Needless to say, the next day I was on the couch with my foot up on pillows, icing it with bags of frozen peas...with a headache from the night before, to boot. But, we did look faboulous!

It's a Gurley Halloween

My mom came across a box full of vintage Halloween items the other day at one of her sales, and she so graciously shared some of her findings with me. See, Halloween is not her favorite holiday...but it sure is mine!

In this box, there were some pretty fabulous Gurley candles! Gurley Novelty, in Buffalo, NY, produced figurine candles that were designed and manufactured by candle maker Franklin Gurley. The candles were commissioned by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company (now ExxonMobile) for the original purpose of using the excess paraffin that was produced during the oil refinery process, and were around in the 1930s. Gurley candles were originally produces under the name Tavern Novelty Candles, but was bought out by Gurley in 1949. Over time, Gurley's business went from paraffin confections such as wax lips and teeth to almost exclusively candle production. Tavern was bought out and the name was changed to Gurley Novelty in 1949. Gurley Novelty made candles for all the major holidays, but the Christmas and Halloween ones are the most sought after.

The Soundry, Vienna, VA

I have some exciting news! I will be selling some of my crocheted jewelry from Suzi of the Stars at The Soundry in Vienna, VA!

The Soundry used to be an auto body shop in the heart of Vienna. The space has been converted into a coffee shop/art gallery/co-op artist space for musicians and artist alike. The Soundry/its members offer classes, workshops, open mic nights, and concerts. On top of all that, they have a boutique area where they offer space to local indie crafters (like me!) to sell their wares!

There are some seriously talented people in the area, and I am honored to be part of it!

Sully Quilt Show

These are my finds from the other weekend! They are vintage feedsacks, and the bottom two are specifically made to be used as aprons (or anything else with an edged border). I haven't decided what to do with them, yet, but I am sure I will figure out something!

I went to the Sully Quilt Show—an annual event at the Sully Historic Site in Chantilly, Virginia. The show is held on the grounds of the 1794 home of Richard Bland Lee and has vendors that sell new and antique quilts, fiber arts, antique linens, antique sewing tools, fabric, and books. There are also 18th century-dressed artisans demonstrating weaving, tatting, spinning, and quilting. This year there were antique quilts on display in the Lee house, but we were running late and it closed before we could make it through the vendors.

Fall/Winter Craft Projects

So, I haven't been posting a lot about my crafting projects lately. This summer has been keeping me pretty busy with the gardens, yard work, my vintage shop, and of course...vacations. Also, when it's 100 degrees outside, I seem to have no desire to pick up my yarn and hook or fabric. Yuck!

Unclog Your Drain Naturally

Unclog your drain naturally without using corrosive and harsh chemicals. Use baking soda, vinegar, and hot water! This weekend, we had a clogged bathroom sink drain. I used this method with great success. Here's how to do it:

Pour 1/4 C baking soda down the drain. Follow with 1 C hot vinegar (microwave for 1 min). Let sit for 30-40 minutes. Fill tea kettle with water and bring to a boil. Pour steaming hot water down drain.

And that's it! Super easy and earth friendly!

Kitchen Remodel Colors

Ah...how I love to dream about renovating our small galley kitchen. I must say that it (along with both bathrooms) is in dire need of a remodel! I mean...the countertops are about an inch away from the wall! If that doesn't scream "REMODEL ME!", I don't know what does.

I love our 1949 ranch/rambler home, and want to our kitchen to have a late 40s/early 50s retro feel. So, I have been researching and looking and window shopping. And, I have finally come up with a color palette, inspired by the photo below!

First Dill Pickles

This weekend I made my first batch of dill pickles from the pickling cucumbers and dill from the garden! I found a really great step-by-step guide to making them at www.inthegardenonline.com. After 7 years of driving my Chevy Cavalier, I have said goodbye to my old friend...and said hello to my new Ford Fiesta! We have been looking at getting a new car for a while, and I am so glad we waited for the Fiestas to come out. Other cars we were interested in where the Mazda 3, the Honda Fit, and the VW Golf TDI. But once we test drove the Fiesta, the choice was clear.

How we chose the Fiesta:
1. Gas mileage—with 40 MPG highway, we were sold!
2. Personality—cute little hatchback model just makes you want to squeeze her!
3. Quality Build—quiet cabin and solid construction so it doesn't feel like you are driving a tin can down the highway.
4. Handling—peppy and sporty!
5. Price—decent price with extras that are only found in high-end luxury cars

If you are looking for a new car for better gas mileage and a lower carbon footprint, the Fiesta is the place to look!

Hydrangea Wreath

First off, I love hydrangeas! In fact, that was the sole flower used in our wedding and reception. I had white hydrangeas for my girls' bouquets, my bouquet, the ceremony arrangements, floral cones on the aisles, the centerpieces at the reception, and all around my cakes. Now that I think about it, I can't believe that it was already almost two years ago...seems like yesterday. Oh, and, aren't my girls beautiful?

Secondly, I think that the use of one type of flower is absolutely beautiful and very stunning. While I don't really like silk flowers in flower arrangements, I do think they have their place in home decor. Mainly for wreaths and...hmmm, I can't think of any other time right now.

For my wreath, I used:
14" styrofoam wreath form
2" shear white ribbon (leftover from my wedding)
9 - silk flower hydrangeas
Hot glue gun and glue sticks

I cut the ends of the stems down so there was about 5 inches left. I then glued one end of the ribbon to the back of the wreath and wrapped the ribbon around the form 3 or 4 times. I hot glued the stem of the first flower and placed it so it overlapped the wrapped ribbon, then I continued wrapping around the stem and wreath form.

I continued to glue, wrap, glue, all the way around. I also hot glued three leaves to fill in spot that I thought needed it. This is what it turned out like...

My MiniCards from Moo just came in the mail, and I am so excited about them!

I am part of the Vintage Market Team on Etsy (ning.com account here). There was talk about doing a business card exchange, so I figured I better get some cards! The mini cards are about half the size of a regular business card, and you can customize all of the cards. I ordered 100 cards and used 20 different items from my shop for the fronts. Check them out!

American Pickers in NY

This story really doesn't have anything to do with me, but I think it is worthy enough of sharing...

The History Chanel has a show called American Pickers. If you haven't seen it, imagine a cross between A&E's Hoarders and the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. Two guys, Frank and Mike, travel to backwoods America and "pick" items from people's homes...with the owner's permission and payment, of course.

Anyway, long story short...they were in Groveland, NY, taping on Thursday! Groveland, NY, is a small town in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, and about 7 miles from where I grew up. They were there "picking" from an old church. The current owners are turning it into a recording studio, and I guess the basement was filled with "pickins." You know how word travels fast in a small town, so when my mom found out they were there, she headed over to meet them. Only Mike was around, but she got a "pick-ture" with him and his autograph, and said he was super nice!

My wonderful mom is on the left.

Secretly, I think my mom wishes she had his job...she would be super good at it, that's for sure.

Free Garden Plans

We plan to redo our flower garden in the front of our house this fall. As you can see from the picture, the front of our house is pretty simple...but boring. The major changes will include, removing the bushes from the front of the house and extending the garden on the right side of the house to the walkway and driveway. As of right now, all I know is I want the garden to be very natural looking with lots of color.

While researching and trying to figure out what I actually want to replace the bushes and fill all the new space with, I stumbled across a great resource for garden planning! The Better Homes and Gardens Web site, bhg.com, provides free downloadable garden plans for everything from container to formal to butterfly gardens. You can find them all here.

The PDF provides you with an illustration, diagram, and listing of all the plants used. Tweak the garden to your space—swap out plants for your favorites, add more plants to fill space, or take out plants for a smaller space. You can even use it just to see what plants look nice with others. It's a great tool!

If you are a subscriber to bhg.com, you can use their "Plan-a-Garden" tool. I haven't used it, but it looks pretty cool. You can personalize your own garden by size, shape, and plants. You can even add walkways, trellises, trees, etc.

My Visit to Lily Dale, NY

Lily Dale is a cute little town located in the southwestern part of NY, just south of Buffalo and near the PA border. Lily Dale (or the Lily Dale Assembly) is home to many pschyics, mediums, and spiritualists alike. In the summer months, they open their gates (yes, it is a gated community with a guard and all) to the public. I went for a reading, with no idea what to expect. I will not go into the details of my reading, but it was very good.

From the moment you enter the town, established in 1879, you are filled with a sense of calmness and peace. The town is quiet with only the sound of low-tone wind chimes in the background. On the grounds you will find gift shops, a coffee house, a cafeteria-style restaurant, an old hotel, and many B&Bs. There is also a Fairy Trail through the woods, the Forest Temple and Inspiration Stump, the Healing Temple. You can attend a workshop at the old Lakeside Assembly Hall or Historic Lily Dale Auditorium, or visit the Lily Dale Museum. There is even a Pet Cemetery (Lily Dale was not short on cats...all super friendly!).

I think the Lily Dale Web site says it best: "We hope you will find here a deep sense of peace and a renewed sense of the divinity within you."

All Natural Pesticide Recipe

Our veggie garden is doing pretty well, but as was to be expected, the bugs have found out about it and are happily eating away at all my hard work! So, what is a girl to do? Make some pesticide soup!

Some pest this spray will repel are ants, aphids, cowpea curculio, flea beetle, japanese beetle, mexican bean beetle, spider mites, squash vine borer, harlequin bug.

What you will need:
1 Large spray bottle (32 oz is good)
1 Fine strainer and cheese cloth
1 teaspoon neatural dish soap
1 Jalapeno
1/2 Large white onion
3-4 Cloves of garlic
4 1/4 Cups of water

Step 1: Roughly chop jalapeno (with seeds) and onion. Smash garlic with side of knife and palm, peel, and roughly chop. Blend jalapeno, onion, and garlic in food processor until mixture is almost a paste.

Step 2: Mix 4 1/4 cups of water and jalapeno mixture to pot. Bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Let cool.

Step 3: Place cheese cloth over fine strainer. Pour cooled water mixture over cheese cloth and into container. I used a 4 cup Pyrex measuring cup with spout so I could easily pour into spray bottle.

Step 4: Add soap and transfer to spray bottle. Keep refrigerated up to two weeks.

Important information!
- Make sure to use this on plants that are not wilted. If you have wilted plants, make sure to water them well the night before use.
- Do not use in mid-day or direct sunlight. Wait until either early morning or evening. Using during the afternoon sun could damage your plants more.
- Make sure to spray the undersides of the leave as that is where all the little buggies like to hide.
- The first use should be light, just to see how your plants will react.

Grilled Stuffed Calamari

Say what you want about Martha Stewart, but you can't deny she has amazing recipes and fantastic entertaining ideas. A good friend of mine got me a subscription to Everyday Food, and recently I got myself a subscription to Whole Living (Body + Soul) magazine...a year subscription for only $10! Who says the magazine industry is dead? I don't know what I would do without either.

Anyway, the point of me telling you this is that the Whole Living website, has a great catalog of recipes. I found a recipe to Grilled Stuff Calamari and it was paired with a Fresh Bean Salad. The bean salad calls for fava beans. I will not be using them again...what a pain is the A.S.S. But, both recipes have a citrus twist to them, so they work wonderfully together!

It was our first time cooking squid. I did the prepping and my husband did the grilling. All in all it was a great meal that looks a lot harder that it actually was. Definitely worth a try. Happy grilling!

Clothespin Bag Tutorial

Because we are trying to be "greener," we ordered the Sunshine Clothes Dryer from G&G Industries. It's American made and really big. Bigger than I thought it was going to be. Well, of course I would need to make a cute clothespin bag to go with my new clothesline!

What you will need:
1 - 18.5" x 37" piece of fabric (if it is directional, make sure the pattern is running parallel to the 18.5" side)
1 - Fat Quarter to make bias tape
Hanger (I used a metal one because that is what we have extra of, but any hanger will do)
Rotary cutter
Quilting ruler
Pins
Pencil or chalk marker
Template for opening (download here)

Step 1: Print out and cut out template. Find center of main fabric on 18.5" side. Press for crease. Either use folded template by lining up folded edge of fabric to folded edge of template, or open fabric and place full template crease to crease. Either way make sure the top of the template lines up with the top of your fabric. See below. Trace and cut out.

Step 2: Make bias tape from fat quarter fabric. Great tutorial found here. Cut strips 2" wide. These will fold to 1/5". You will need approximately 27" of bias tape.

Step 3: Sew bias tape around opening, starting from top, around the bottom, and back up. Trim any extra bias tape, making it flush to top of main fabric.

Step 4: Fold fabric in half (wrong side out and opening up). Make sure the bottom overlaps the top by 1/4". This will be folded over and sewn for a clean seam across the back behind the hanger. Cut off top corners to fit your hanger, adding a 1/4".

Step 5: Sew 1/4" seam along top center section of back (where it was overlapped in previous step).

Step 6: Fold fabric in half (wrong side out and opening up) again, making sure all sides match. Sew both sides and top. Turn right side out and push out corners.

And there you have it! A simple and cute clothespin bag for your clothesline. Now...go be green!

Pico De Gallo Recipe

Since we eat quesadillas at least once a week, I like to spice things up sometimes with homemade pico de gallo. I got this recipe from owners of a Mexican restaurant, and it's pretty darn good!

You will need:
2 tomatoes, diced (I like firmer ones. Really ripe tomatoes will make it soupy)
1/2 red onion, diced (I used white since that was all I had on hand)
1/2 jalapeno pepper, diced (Add more if you like it spicier)
1/2 lime, juiced
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 - 2 Tablespoons beer
3 - 4 Tablespoons cilantro, chopped (I omitted this because I didn't have any on hand)
Black pepper to taste

I don't have a juicer, so I use tongs to juice the limes.

Mix all ingredients, and there you have it...yummy and fresh pico de gallo!

Our Woodland Garden

We have a really shady spot in the back corner of our yard. It gets about 2 hours of direct sunlight a day. The rest of the time it gets shade from the neighboring cypress trees and 6-foot fences. The previous owners of the house must not have known what to do with the space, so they covered it up with gravel and stepping stones. Pretty ugly to look at and completely nonfunctional. I thought the little corner needed to be spruced with with some color, so here is what I came up with...

In the Woodland Garden lives the following shade-loving plants: clematis, hydrangea (one of my favorites and flower of choice for our wedding), ferns, hostas, wax begonias, fox glove, toad lily, wood poppy, spotted dead nettle, dwarf Jacob's ladder, and bletilla alba (part of the orchid family).

I wanted to go with all perennials, but planted to begonias this year to fill out the garden some. I think next year, when the perennials have time to do their thing, I will just let it be and allow it be more natural looking. I can't wait until the clematis starts growing up the fence!

Oh and, Lady Meow Meow says "hello!" :)

Well, I finished my cowl, and I think it turned out pretty good. I used vintage buttons from my button stash...I think they are very complementary to the red yarn. As promised, I have worked up the pattern, and it's pretty simple...hence the name.

Gauge: I didn't make a gauge swatch, but your end measurements should be 7.5" x 20.5".
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, Cherry
Hook: I/5.5mm

CH 36

Row 1: Skip 2 CH, 1 SC, *CH 1, skip 1 CH, 1 SC.* Repeat from * to * to end of row. (33 Stitches)

Row 2: CH 2. Turn. *1 SC in CH SP of previous row, CH 1.* Repeat from * to * to end of row. (33 Stitches)

Row 3–80: Repeat Row 2.

Rows 81: CH 2. Turn. (1 SC in CH SP of previous row, CH 1) 4 times, CH 3, skip 1 CH SP, (1 SC in next CH space, CH 1) 7 times, CH 3, skip 1 CH SP, (1 SC in next CH space, CH 1) 4 times, 1 SC in CH SP.

Note: Row 81 contains your button holes. Adjust hole to your own button size/quantity. My buttons were a little over 1" in diameter, and I used two.

Row 82: CH 2. Turn. (1 SC in CH SP of previous row, CH 1) 4 times, work 2 (1 SC, CH 1) into CH 4 SP of previous row, (1 SC in next CH SP, CH 1) 6 times, work 2 (1 SC, CH 1) into second CH 4 SP of previous row, (1 SC in next CH space, CH 1) 3 times, 1 SC in CH SP.

Rows 83–85: Repeat Row 2.

Finish off, weave in ends, sew on your buttons, wear your cowl!

This pattern has not been tested, so please let me know if you find any mistakes. This pattern is for personal use only. Make this cowl for yourself or friends (I am sure they will love you for it), but do not sell the pattern or product made from this pattern. Please do not copy and republish this pattern anywhere. Mini Embroidery Quilt Swap Update

Last month, I told you about how I signed up for the Mini Embroidery Quilt Swap through Quilting Gallery. See my original post here. I have finished the embroidery, and will be moving onto the piecing and quilting part this weekend. I thought I should post some pictures of my progress.

My quilt swap partner did not specify any likes/dislikes. Given the freedom to do anything, I had a bit of a hard time deciding what to do...go with redwork (like the example) or branch out and go colorful. I love redwork, but at the same time wanted to be creative and not just copy the example. So, I looked through my stash for inspiration and I kept going back to the simple red fabrics...redwork it will be!

Now I just need to trim the stitchery, add borders, quilt, bind with hanging option, and label.

Does anyone else get overwhelmed with choices?

Zombie Cupcakes

I chose Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, by Jane Austin and Seth Grahame-Smith, for this month's bookclub. I have never read Pride and Prejudice, and am interested in what the real story line is when Grahame-Smith inserted the zombie scenes. Anyways, I really liked it and think it's worth the read.

So, to keep with the zombie theme I decided to make zombie cupcakes. I used a red velvet cake recipe found here. The frosting is .a.m.a.z.i.n.g!

The supplies. Brain mold found here. Chocolate making supplies from Fran's Cakes and Candy in Fairfax, VA.

The chocolate in the brain molds. I found that the pink was too pink for a brain, and ended up just going with gray.

The final product! Yuuummmm braaaaaaaains.
